Scripture for Our Generation: Psalm 54

Somehow verse 27 had never come to my attention in this otherwise well-known passage.

Jacob, why do you say,
and Israel, why do you assert:
My way is hidden from the LORD
and my claim is ignored by my God”?

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
Yahweh is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the whole earth.
He never grows faint or weary;
there is no limit to His understanding.

He gives strength to the weary
and strengthens the powerless.

Youths may faint and grow weary,
and young men stumble and fall,

but those who trust in the LORD
will renew their strength;
they will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary;
they will walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:27-31)

  1. I don’t jog, I never did because I don’t enjoy it. But, in the Army, I had to do a lot of it. Every year, as we did our annual PT Test, and I was jogging a two-mile stretch, it was this passage that I would recite to myself. It got me through many miles of anguish. And yes, verse 27 is easy to miss and forget. And so much like me in my discussions with my Master. I’m so often that child wagging his finger at his parent, demanding, “What did you do?” Such an ironically comic attempt at reversal. More fitting for standup comedy than morning prayers. But such is my walk with my Master, and His patience with me.
