Two Dates

dateIn what seems to me like a cosmic joke, a person’s life is often boiled down to a sequence of numbers – two dates with a dash between them.

The first is the date of our birth. Its arrival every year is an occasion for joy, gifts, or perhaps just a little extra attention. We write it on official documents. It’s a friend to us, right down to the whole “absence makes the heart grow fonder” thing – the further we get, the worse we feel.

The other, the day of our death, is unknown to us until it arrives. We will, by definition, never write it down. By the time it’s known, we can do nothing about it. It evokes loss, shadow, evaluation, the arranging of one’s affairs and moving on.

At least it does for “the rest of mankind, who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

  1. This is why the Church commemorates saints, not on their birthdays, but on the anniversary of the day that they died. It happens that I just wrote a post about a saint I knew, remembering him because this is the anniversary of his death, his entrance into glory. J.

  2. This is a beautiful piece. Not long after being saved, someone said this life is just the title page in the book of eternity. That has always stuck with me and I look forward to chapter one. I hope you get to do the things you’re hoping for and I’m sorry for your friend’s passing. May the Lord comfort her family and friends.

      • See, this is why I need to go back and read Narnia. I’d read all of the series except ‘The Last Battle’ before being saved. I didn’t want the adventure to end. Lol I bet now, if I go back, I’ll pick up on references to scripture and finally finish the series.
